Come.Listen.Dance is a new Global Pop concert series in Berlin. It is a platform for bands and musicians of all genres and backgrounds interested in fusing rhythms, sounds, and vocal styles from around the world.
Come.listen.dance was born of the meeting of Michal Limboski (POL) and Nick Morrison (FRA/USA). They discovered that beyond the ubiquitous influences of blues and Euro-american folk, they share a love of African and Indian music and a curiosity about how elements of diverse local musical styles can be integrated into contemporary western popular music.
The launch concert for the series will feature four distinctive artists– Malika Alaoui, Dja Barro, Roland Satterwhite & Limboski–in a collaborative performance, supported by an all-star Berlin rhythm section directed by Morrison.
More information on the artists:
Malika Alaoui is a swiss-moroccan vocalist, performer and composer. She toured for 4 years around the world as the lead role singer of Alegria by Cirque du Soleil. Malika collaborated with musicians such as Stuart Hamm, Robert Fripp, L’Entourloop and the artist Okwui Okpokwasili for the 10th Biennale for Contemporary Art in Berlin. She is currently the singer/voice creator for the Awakening by Gratte Ciel, and the vocalist for the jazz band Stand-Arts and for the Minimal Utopia Orkestra. Recently, Malika founded the project Maemo to sing her “afropean nomad chansons”.
Adama Dembele aka Djah Barro was born into a family of musicians in Bobo Dioulasso, in Burkina Faso, where he grew up playing percussion and was further trained by the late Souleymane Coulibaly. Since coming to Germany, he has worked in various musical projects as well the Théâtre Comme (Alles super + Turando) of the Berlin Theater and the Theaters Morgenstern. His début album as a reggae artist is titled ‘Free Afrique’ and includes the arranging work the renowned Ivory Coast musician #Moussa_Doumbia_Moses and mixing by the legendary #Tim_Ray_Brown. It has just won the ‘Golden Marley’ award for Reggae music in Burkina Faso.
Michal Limboski is a vocalist, guitarist and music producer. He has released 8 albums of original music. In 2016 he signed with Sony Music and the subsequent two albums garnered him recognition as an alternative-pop artist in Poland, where he has been nominated for the “Fryderyki” Awards for the albums „Tribute to Georgie Buck“ and „Poliamoria“. In addition to his rootsy euro-american guitar playing and songwriting, he is known for his use of unusual vocal techniques such as the overtone singing styles kargyraa and sygit.
Roland Satterwhite a Canadian/American Violinist, Violist and Singer. He has lived in Berlin since 2008, and leads the trio Tolyqyn. His songs are particularly inspired by Delta blues and traditional music from west africa including Gnawa music and kora Griot traditions. He has developed a unique way of plucking the viola and his lyrics cover a diverse range of topics, including politics, love, and animals. As a violinist Roland has played with many internationally known musicians including Albita, Marta Gomez, Agujetas Chico, Gary Dial, Pedrito Martinez, Jorge Pardo, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Marta Topferova, and Carlos Hayre. He is also a member of the Moka Efti Orchestra and Django Lassi.
Nick Morrison has been the guitar player for a variety of Berlin-based bands in styles ranging from Afro to Blues & Pop, including the Charity Children, Tiliboo Afrobeat, The Soul Thrivers and Farafi. Through his association with the Polyversal Souls and the Philophon label he shared the stage with such luminaries of African music as Alemayehu Eshete, Stella Chiweshe and Lee Dodou. He has played on dozens of releases, has released two albums under his own name, and teaches guitar at BIMM Berlin.
